Questions to ask when selecting a Breeder:

  • Are they active in working their own dogs for their intended purpose?
  • Do they provide health, vaccination and historical information on their dogs at the time of sale?
  • Do they provide customers with all papers necessary for registration?
  • Do they offer guarantees, warrantees and ongoing support?
  • Do they offer advice and/or services for ongoing training and development for the lifetime of the dog?
  • Do they maintain sanitary, clean quarters for the dogs?
  • Have they spent a number of years studying and learning about your breed?
  • Do they know their breeding stock in great detail going back several generations?
  • Do they have a detailed understanding of the standard and type of dog they're breeding for?
  • Are they knowledgeable about the hereditary problems that occur in their breed?
  • Have they done the appropriate tests on breeding stock prior to breeding in order to decrease the likelihood of their occurrence in their pups?
  • Do they consider temperament a crucially important breeding quality?
  • Are they willing to take back a dog of their breeding if a buyer cannot keep it for any reason?
  • Do they carefully plan every litter with the goal of improving the breed?
  • Do they ensure and insist that any animal used for breeding is proven to have the abilities and other characteristics essential to the breed?
  • Do they breed for health, performance, and conformation?
  • Do they keep outstanding puppies for their own breeding program?
  • Are they willing and able to educate their customers?
  • Do they thoroughly evaluate potential customers to be sure each dog is put into a good home?
  • Are they willing to refuse to sell a dog to an unsuitable customer?
  • Do they correctly socialize puppies and older dogs?
